What do Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs) do? This online program is offered for either a two-year or three-year plan, depending upon the student’s needs. Speech-Language Pathology Assistants help these individuals to recover their ability to speak, understand and interact with others. These disorders isolate people from their friends, family and the community and limit job and educational opportunities. Accidents, illnesses, birth defects and substance abuse can all contribute to communication disorders. A communication disorder may affect a person’s ability to pronounce sounds intelligibly, to understand what is being said, to process and remember spoken information, to use appropriate vocabulary and grammar, to speak fluently without stuttering, or to use his or her voice appropriately. These disorders affect infants, children, adults and the elderly. One in six Americans has a speech, hearing or language disorder. We sat down with one of just six students in the program, Stephanie Sharpley, to understand how the department separates itself from others and provides students a highly specialized experience. The Master of Clinical Pathologists’ Assistant Program at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry may be small in size, but that doesn’t take anything away from the impact of their work and commitment to the community. PAs assume major responsibility for the initial examination and dissection of all surgically removed tissues and, to a variable extent, for the dissection of bodies during post-mortem examination. The extra technical skills brought to the laboratory by PAs standardize and enhance the overall quality in the practice of anatomical pathology. Pathologists' Assistants (PAs) are highly-trained health professionals who work under the supervision of a medically-qualified pathologist providing a broad range of services in anatomical pathology. Our program was the first of its kind accredited in Canada. In 2012, the program was approved as a professional program leading to a Master of Clinical Sciences-Pathologists' Assistant.
